I may have mentioned recently that I don’t have a sweet tooth.  🤷🏽‍♀️

I sort of have a salty, crunchy tooth.  I believe my exact words were, “My personal nemesis is potato chips (and popcorn), basically fluffy carbs that turn into sugar.”

Which made me think about the fact that sometimes, you are just gonna eat the chips.  🫠

You know all the health facts about the chips, the calorie count, the fact that it’s deep fried and highly palatable, which means you’re also gonna eat way more than you should.  And sometimes that’s still not enough to stop you.

I want to be clear when I say this.  I am NOT encouraging you to eat potato chips.  But, if you are going to eat potato chips, can you at least read the label and pick a better chip, so that you’re not making matters worse by ingesting additional toxins that could be avoided?  🙈

Recently I’ve come across a few brands that I want to highlight for their lack of ingredients. They don’t have any hydrogenated ingredients, bad oils, MSG, dyes or artificial flavors to name a few.

The chips below are cooked in avocado oil (which has a higher smoke point than olive oil) and the only other ingredients are potatoes and sea salt.  They are still chips, so definitely not a health food, however, they certainly have a lower toxic load than the vast majority of the chips on the market.  Remember, toxins are stored in our fat cells.  🥴

I do not consider popcorn a health food either.

Mainly because  1) It’s a fluffy carb.  2) Corn (along with wheat and soy) is one of the most heavily pesticided crops on earth, and most people are not eating organic.  3) It is usually cooked in toxic seed oils.  4) The toppings added to it can sometimes be concerning.

The brand below seeks to eliminate some of these concerns by using organic popcorn, organic ghee (which also has a high smoke point) and the only other ingredient is Himalayan salt.

The last thing that I want to mention is that many times, our cravings can be to satisfy emotional needs, not actual hunger.  Food is an excellent symbolic substitute!  🥹

If you find yourself emotionally eating, try to get present.  Stay present.  Stay awake.  Eat slowly.

Don’t eat fast like a criminal stealing something.  Actually, get the pleasure you are seeking from the experience.  When we eat under stress, in this case eating fast, the brain doesn’t have enough time to register taste and pleasure and aroma and satisfaction and a sense of fulfillment.  And it makes you want to eat more…

And lastly (for real this time), forgive yourself.  If you are the person that beats yourself up when you ‘cheat’, DON’T.  It is unhelpful and more likely to make you emotional eat sooner.  😲

Anyhoo, that’s my unpopular opinion for the week.  Good luck!  And talk soon.
