Fishcake FAQ’s
How should I season my fishcakes?
I just made this question up, cuz no one would dare ask me that. 🤣 Fishcakes by UMAMI is the only thing I season my fishcakes with and they are good! I made it to take the guesswork out of fishcakes. Occasionally, I also add some fresh parsley.
What size should my fishcakes be?
I base the size of my fishcakes on the size of my buns. If you bought big buns, don’t be out there acting crazy with small fishcakes. You want your fishcake to be big enough to slightly come out the side of the bun so that you can go around and bite those pieces off (or maybe that’s just me. 🤷🏽♀️).
Curry or not?
Either! I like both! BUT I do prefer a hint of curry, and added the slightest touch of curry to Fishcakes by UMAMI because of this and… *chef’s kiss*.
How much of the fishcake blend should I use?
Honestly, I use a lot! You know how they say that if you over salt something put a potato in it? WELL, think about that when you season your fishcake. Potatoes absorb salt. And since Fishcakes by UMAMI is full of all that herb & spice goodness (not just salt), you’ll need to season generously.

Ratio of fish to potato?
I’m a 5lb bag of potato to 2-3 bags of codfish girl. This year I’m going with 3 cuz it means lower carb, and I’m currently working on my summer body. But really, I’m just extravagant and I like to come across clumps of fish.
Deep fry or shallow fry?
Shallow, in coconut oil. I’m a healthy girl.. 😎 Trust me, it tastes the same.
How do you ensure they don’t have bones?
Cook your fish separate from the potatoes and you’ll be able to see the bones when you flake it. If you wanna go real deep, you can use your hands. 🤣
What other types of breading besides flour?
I use Bobs Red Mill Gluten Free 1 to 1 Baking Flour. I don’t notice any difference from regular flour and I get it at Lindos.
How mashed does the potato need to be?
This is a personal preference question. I don’t want even one lump in my potato so I use a ricer. But some people like lumps apparently… 🙈
What do I do with leftover Fishcakes by UMAMI?!
Use it on fish, chicken and lamb! You can also use in soups & stews and beans. I haven’t tried it on veggies yet but I’m sure it would be delicious, especially cauliflower.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have a question that I didn’t cover.
